IUPAC NAME:methyl N-[N'-[2-[(2-methoxyacetyl)amino]-4-phenylsulfanylphenyl]-N-methoxycarbonylcarbamimidoyl]carbamate
Febantel is a prodrugmetabolized in vivo to fenbendazole which is a benzimidazole anthelmintic. Itis used in veterinary medicine in pets and livestock against internalparasites. It is not used against agriculture and household pests. It belongsto the chemical class of the pro benzimidazoles. Febantel Annex I of Council Regulation. Febantel is used for the treatment and control ofgastro-intestinal roundworms, lung worms’ and tapeworms.
Side Effects:
When it is used fordosages in horses, side reactions are unlikely to occur. Anaphylaxis is listedas a possible reaction, but case reports documenting this were not found in theliterature. At very high doses such as 8 times labeled a self-limiting diarrheahas been described.Also In dogs andcats is unlikely to cause serious side effects at usual doses. Dogs may exhibitsalivation, anorexia, emesis or gagging, and diarrhea or soft stools. Incidenceof these effects was less than 3% of dogs treated in clinical trials. Cats may showsigns such as less than 10% incidence of salivation, vomiting, depression andrejection of the paste. These effects are described as mild and self-limiting.
Precautions:
When this medicineused alone in horses the manufacturer lists no contraindications to the use ofthe drug. It is considered to be safe in breeding stallions and pregnant mares.The combination product is labeled as being contraindicated in horses sufferingfrom colic, diarrhea, constipation, or infectious disease until such conditionshave been corrected. The combination product is contraindicated in pregnantsmall animals.
Overdose:
Febantel has areported 40X margin of safety after a single oral dose in horses. Slightlydecreased red blood cell counts, hemoglobin and hematocrit may be noted for 3weeks after this dosage. Repeated doses of 8X recommended resulted only in aself-limiting diarrhea. For more information on the toxicity for this compoundrefer to its monograph found later in this section.
